Bevagna

indietro

Bevagna is a little village situated in the foothills of Montefalco. It is surrounded by a fertile valley, rich in water streams and in cultivations that the Latin poets mentioned in their works. The old town - the roman Mevania - is surrounded by the medieval walls interrupted by a series of gates and openings leading through to beautiful little streets and to the stunning main piazza. The building of the via Flaminia in 220 bC was particularly important for the history of Bevagna increasing its prosperity and commercial and economic development.
After the fall of the Roman Empire,  the power over the town was contended by Spoleto, Foligno (Trinci family), the German Empire (Conti Coccorone), the Papal State and Perugia (Baglioni Family). The medieval town was then divided into 4 gaite - districts - for administrative reasons, which were named after four  churches: Sant'Angelo, San Pietro, San Giorgio and Santa Maria. The Mercato delle Gaite finds inspiration in this old division: every year, in June, the daily life of the inhabitants of Bevagna during the period between 1250 and 1350 is recreated.
